Turning Curiosity into Confidence Through STEAM

On any given afternoon at our Clubhouses, you can hear the excitement before you even walk into the room, youth gathered around tables, testing ideas, solving challenges, and proudly showing off their latest LEGO creations.
What may look like play on the surface is actually something much deeper.
Through the STEAM LEGO Program at BGC Toronto Kiwanis, young people are building critical thinking skills, learning how to work through challenges, and discovering confidence in their own ideas. With support from BMO Insurance and our partner THINKspace Toronto, youth across multiple Clubhouse locations have been able to participate in hands-on STEAM activities that encourage creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in a fun and engaging environment.
Over the course of the program, participants have taken on increasingly complex challenges, learning to plan, test, redesign, and try again when things do not work the first time. Facilitators have seen youth grow more confident in sharing ideas, supporting peers, and taking leadership during activities.
One of the most meaningful outcomes has been the level of ongoing engagement. Many youth continue returning week after week, asking for more advanced challenges and are eager to push their creativity even further. Alongside technical and problem-solving skills, the program has also helped foster friendship, belonging, and social connections across our Club communities.
This year, the partnership also extended beyond STEAM programming through a March Break Volleyball Clinic supported by BMO Insurance. The clinic created another opportunity for youth to stay active, build confidence, and strengthen peer connections during the school break.
We are grateful to BMO Insurance and THINKspace Toronto for helping create spaces where young people can learn, explore, and grow, one idea, one challenge, and one build at a time.
