COMPETITIVE SPARRING

Cabbagetown Youth Centre and Boxing Club’s boxing program is open to all who want to challenge themselves and compete under the Canadian Amateur boxing guidelines. This program will focus on developing the confidence, self-discipline and technical skills of elite athletes who are able to compete at club shows, Ontario tournaments and National level tournaments.

A medical evaluation and membership to Boxing Ontario are mandatory

COMPETITIVE SPARRING MEMBERSHIP

JUNIOR – 8 – 16 years old

(born between 2007 – 2015)

  • Non-refundable initial registration fee – $20
  • Monthly fee – $50
  • Must renew yearly

YOUTH – 17 – 19 years old

(born between 2004 – 2006)

  • Non-refundable initial registration fee – $20
  • Monthly fee – $60
  • Must renew yearly

ELITE – 20 + years old

(born before 2003)

  • Non-refundable initial registration fee – $20
  • Monthly fee – $70
  • Must renew yearly

CHILDREN’S NON-CONTACT BOXING

JUNIOR PROGRAM – 6 – 13 years old (born between 2010 – 2017)

Our junior program is all about teamwork, building confidence, making new friends, and having fun while learning the basics of boxing. With a certified coach, members will have a fun warm-up with skipping, shadow boxing and the use of the bags and pads.

Weekly fee – $10 – Can register for once a week or all 4 days.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 4 – 5 pm

Saturday 12 – 1 pm

FEMALE RECREATIONAL BOXERCISE CLASSES

Hey Ladies! Get the day started on the right foot – or should we say, punch! Warm up with some skipping and shadow boxing, then take it to the next level with some heavy bag work and punching on the focus mitts. Finish everything off with some circuit work, ab exercises and a short cool down. Don’t worry if you’re a rookie, we’ll get you started with the basics so that you get the most out of your workout. Always fun, and always worth it.

Monthly membership fee is $20 Per class fee – $10 to be paid to the coach.

Sign up with the monthly membership fee, choose the days you would like to attend then arrange payment with the coach at the first class.

CO-ED RECREATIONAL BOXERCISE CLASSES

Are you ready to throw your hat in the ring?! Get ready to learn the basics of boxing and conditioning with a certified coach. This class is open to beginners, intermediate and advanced boxers. Our boxing classes include a warmup, bag work and partner drills with pad work. Join us for a skills-building workout!

Monthly membership fee is $20 Per class fee – $10 to be paid to the coach.

Sign up with the monthly membership fee, choose the days you would like to attend then arrange payment with the coach at the first class.

OPEN GYM MEMBERSHIP

Come in and use the bags and weight room during the open gym hours of the club. The monthly fee only covers the use of equipment, coaching is not available with this membership.
 
Non-competitive sparring is available during this time. In order to spar a medical evaluation and membership to Boxing Ontario is mandatory

Monthly fee – $50

Monday – Friday 10 am – 12 pm

Monday – 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Wednesday and Friday – 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Run Club

Running is a key component of a boxer’s training. It can also be a lot of fun.

Run Club is open to competitive and recreational members. We will focus on running workouts that will help improve your boxing endurance, speed and general fitness.

Anyone afraid of being too slow need not worry, no runners left behind. 

Please note: We run in all weather. Please dress appropriately.

Conditioning

Strength, stamina, agility, flexibility.

Focus on some key components that will further your boxing skill, as well as your everyday fitness in our conditioning sessions. Open to both competitive and recreational members, we will focus on a circuit style workout with boxing skills as the main focus. Perfect for all levels, as all movements can be modified when required.

Advanced tech box 

This signature class puts boxing technique at the forefront and is designed to refine and improve your boxing skills. Great for all levels of experience, you continue to build endurance, power, speed, and flexibility while improving your technical boxing skills like footwork, pinpoint punching accuracy, lightning-fast reflexes and hand speed. In essence the advanced tech box class emphasizes the main objective of boxing: to hit and not get hit.

Technical Boxing

Come enjoy a morning workout class with a focus on the art of boxing. This class focuses on footwork, boxing styles and counter punching strategies followed with endurance conditioning. Students will enjoy a full boxing workout and gain an insight into the sweet science.

COACHER’S BIOS

HEAD COACH – Johnny Kalbhenn

Johnny started his boxing career at the age of 6! His first bout was in 1969.

Johnny holds a level 3 National Coaching Certificate.

From 1980 – 1984 he held the Senior National Champion title in the lightweight class
Johnny competed in the 1984 Olympics and in 1989 was the Canadian Professional Champion.

Kalbhenn was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Ontario Hall of Fame in 2018.
He has been giving back to the Cabbagetown community since 1991 and is still giving. His love for his clients and the sport is tremendous.

COMPETITIVE LEAD COACH – Marcus Ward

Marcus has been in the world of boxing since 1972 having bouts in Canada as well as the U.S.

Since 1985 he has been an official with Boxing Ontario-Central region with his level 4 certification.

Marcus has been an Official Referee since the mid 80’s supervising shows and tournaments. Ward also coached for the Canada Winter Games in 2019. He has been giving back to the community for the past 34 years as a coach and Official at Cabbagetown Youth Centre and Boxing Club.

COACH REY – Rey Morales

Coach Rey’s boxing career started in Mexico City at the age of 12. While at the University of Mexico he competed for the University’s team.

Coach Rey competed for Cabbagetown Youth Centre and Boxing club for 6 years. While competing for CYC he has garnered many trophies, belts and Provincial titles as an amateur boxer prior to becoming a professional boxer.

Morales holds a Level 3 NCCP coaching certificate as well as a Chief Second Professional Boxing License.
He belongs to the Long Term Athlete Development planning committee for Boxing Ontario and is a scout for the RBC Training Ground. Morales is a member of the Boxing Ontario High Performance Committee and a coach for Team Ontario.

COACH HEATHER – Heather Hopkins

Coach Heather has been a part of the CYC boxing team for the past 20 years! She has held multiple Provincial titles, won a National Silver Medal, and earned the Ringside 2018 Championship Bantamweight Masters Division.

Hopkins is in the process of completing her Level 2 National Coaching certification.

Heather is an avid runner having completed 17 marathons (placing 1st in the 2017 St Lawrence Marathon) This makes Heather an all-around coach in and outside of the boxing ring!
