More Than Summer Camp: A Summer of Belonging, Growth, and Adventure at BGC Toronto Kiwanis

For many children, summer is a time of excitement, discovery, and new experiences. At BGC Toronto Kiwanis, it’s also a season of belonging, where children build healthy friendships, develop confidence, and create memories that last well beyond the final day of camp.

Every summer, our Clubhouses become welcoming spaces where children are encouraged to learn, explore, and simply enjoy being kids. Through caring staff, engaging programming, and opportunities to try something new, our goal is to ensure every child feels supported, valued, and connected.

A Place Where Every Child Belongs

What makes summer at BGC Toronto Kiwanis unique is the strong sense of community that is intentionally built every day. Our staff take the time to get to know every child by name, fostering meaningful relationships with both children and their families.

Each day balances structure with creativity, giving campers the chance to develop new skills while exploring their interests, taking healthy risks, and discovering what they’re capable of.

Our hope is that every child leaves the summer knowing they belong, having formed meaningful friendships, discovered new passions, and gained confidence in themselves. Just as importantly, we want every child to know they are surrounded by adults and peers who genuinely care about them.

Why Summer Programming Matters

Summer can be a challenging time for many families. While school may be out, the need for a safe, engaging, and supportive environment continues.

Quality summer programming provides children and youth with opportunities to stay active, build friendships, and continue developing important social and emotional skills. It also offers mentorship and positive adult role models during a season when many of the everyday supports available through school are temporarily unavailable.

For parents and caregivers, these programs provide peace of mind, knowing their children are spending their days in a safe, supervised, and enriching environment while they continue working.

Without access to quality summer opportunities, many young people may spend much of their break isolated at home or relying heavily on screens. At BGC Toronto Kiwanis, every day is designed to encourage connection, creativity, physical activity, and personal growth.

Adventures That Inspire Learning

This summer has been filled with exciting adventures and creative experiences.

One of the highlights has been our Percy Jackson-themed session at the Gerrard Clubhouse, where campers immersed themselves in the world of Greek mythology. Children designed demigod shields and swords, created pottery and mosaic art, and participated in imaginative games like Capture the Golden Fleece and Hide from Medusa.

The adventure extended beyond the Clubhouse during a visit to Treetop Trekking & Ziplining, where campers approached the experience as a “demigod quest.” As they navigated aerial courses together, they demonstrated bravery, perseverance, teamwork, and resilience.

Perhaps the most rewarding moments came when children who were initially nervous encouraged one another, celebrated each other’s successes, and left feeling proud of what they had accomplished.

The excitement continues throughout the summer with upcoming trips to Wet ‘n’ Wild Toronto and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), providing even more opportunities for learning, exploration, and fun.

Building Confidence That Lasts

The impact of summer programming often extends far beyond the activities themselves.

Over the course of the summer, children frequently become more confident and independent. A camper who may have been hesitant to participate on the first day might later volunteer during assemblies, try a new activity, or step into a leadership role among their peers.

Along the way, children strengthen essential life skills including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and leadership. These experiences help prepare them not only for the next school year but for future success in their communities.

Friendships also flourish through shared experiences. It’s common to see children arrive knowing no one and leave with lasting friendships built through games, adventures, and everyday moments together.

Supporting Families and Strengthening Communities

Summer programming doesn’t just benefit children; it supports entire families.

Parents and caregivers can continue working with confidence, knowing their children are safe, engaged, and cared for throughout the day. Many families share that their children return home happier, more confident, and excited to talk about everything they’ve experienced.

These moments remind us that summer camp is about much more than keeping children busy. It’s about creating opportunities for young people to grow, discover their strengths, and feel that they belong in a community that believes in them.

At BGC Toronto Kiwanis, summer is about more than keeping children engaged during school breaks. It’s about helping young people discover their strengths, celebrating their successes, and building the confidence to take on new challenges.

As another memorable summer unfolds, we remain committed to creating opportunities that inspire children and youth to learn, lead, and thrive, one adventure, one friendship, and one unforgettable moment at a time.
