Growing Together: A Summer of Connection, Learning, and Community at CAPCHP – St. James Town

At CAPCHP – St. James Town, we know that the early years are an important time for children and families. By creating welcoming spaces where parents, caregivers, and young children can learn, connect, and spend time together, we help families build relationships and feel supported in their community.

This summer, CAPCHP families came together through activities designed to support early learning, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, and create opportunities for families to connect. From sharing stories and exploring the neighbourhood to cooking together and discovering new places across Toronto, each experience helped families build confidence and create lasting memories.

Growing a Love of Reading Together

One of the highlights of our summer programming was our Tuesday Reading Tent. Thanks to a generous donation of books from United for Literacy, families gathered each week to enjoy stories together in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Parents and caregivers shared books with their children, encouraged curiosity, and supported early learning through the simple joy of reading together. Families were also able to select books to take home, helping extend these learning moments beyond the programme and into everyday family life.

We were also delighted to welcome our school principal and vice principal as guest readers. For some families, this was their first opportunity to meet and connect with school staff in a relaxed and welcoming setting. These early relationships help families feel more comfortable with the school community and support children as they begin their learning journey.

Discovering the Community Together

A key part of CAPCHP’s work is helping families feel connected to the community around them. This summer, families participated in local walks and outings throughout Toronto using public transportation and school buses.

For many families—particularly those who are new to Canada or new to the neighbourhood—these experiences provided more than just an outing. They helped parents and caregivers become familiar with community spaces, build confidence navigating the city, and discover places they can continue to enjoy with their children.

Together, families visited the newly renovated Scarborough waterpark, went strawberry picking, explored High Park, visited Riverdale Farm, and enjoyed other community destinations. These shared experiences gave families the chance to connect with one another while creating positive memories with their children.

Learning Through Everyday Moments

Our weekly Cooking with Kids activities provided another opportunity for families to learn and grow together. Parents, caregivers, and children worked side by side preparing simple recipes while building teamwork, communication skills, and confidence in the kitchen.

These activities highlighted an important part of early childhood development: everyday moments can become meaningful learning opportunities. Whether sharing a story, preparing a meal, or exploring a new place, families strengthen their relationships when they spend time learning and experiencing things together.

Celebrating Community Connections

We wrapped up our summer with a community picnic at Regent Park, bringing families together to celebrate the friendships and connections built throughout the programme. Families shared food, conversations, and laughter while children played and enjoyed time with their peers.

The picnic reflected what CAPCHP strives to create every day—a welcoming space where families feel included, supported, and connected.

As we continue our work with parents, caregivers, and young children, we are reminded that strong relationships are at the heart of a strong community. Every conversation, shared activity, and new experience helps families feel welcomed, connected, and supported.

We look forward to continuing to share stories from CAPCHP – St. James Town and celebrating the many ways families learn, grow, and build community together throughout the year.
