Building Community for Seniors in St. James Town

By noon every Thursday, the community room at BGC Toronto Kiwanis begins to fill with familiar faces. Some seniors arrive early to help set up chairs. Others stop catching up with friends they now consider family. The room quickly fills with conversation, laughter, and the comforting feeling of belonging.
For many older adults in St. James Town, these weekly gatherings are about much more than an afternoon activity. They are a chance to leave isolation behind, stay active, learn something new, and reconnect with a community that genuinely cares.
Thanks to the generous support of the Tippet Foundation, BGC Toronto Kiwanis continues to provide a welcoming space where seniors can build friendships, strengthen their well-being, and access meaningful support.
Many of the participants are women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, including newcomers and individuals living on fixed incomes. As the cost of living continues to rise, staying connected to the community has never been more important.
Each Thursday, participants enjoy gentle exercise, mindfulness activities, health education, and seasonal celebrations that bring people together throughout the year. Whether celebrating International Women’s Day, sharing a holiday meal, or enjoying a summer walk through the neighborhood, every gathering creates opportunities for connection and joy.
The support extends beyond Thursday afternoons. Every Friday, BGC Toronto Kiwanis distributes fresh fruit and vegetables to seniors and community members, helping improve access to nutritious food while easing financial pressures for households facing rising grocery costs.
The true impact of this program isn’t measured only by the number of activities offered or food bags distributed. It’s found in the friendships that grow, the confidence that returns, and the simple comfort of knowing there is a place where everyone is welcomed by name.
Together with the Tippet Foundation, we are helping ensure that seniors in St. James Town remain active, connected, healthy, and valued members of our community.
Thank you for making these moments, and this community, possible.
